Atari800 emulator was written by David Firth in 1995 and released under the GPL. So it was available with full source code in C. The code was written with portability in mind and that allowed various people to create ports of Atari800 for PC, Amiga, Atari, Mac and machines running UNIX-like operating systems.

Using the Motorola 68000 CPU, it was a very popular computer havingquite a lot of CPU power at that time.Unlike many other Atari ST emulators which try to give you a goodenvironment for running GEM applications, Hatari tries to emulate the hardwareof a ST as close as possible so that it is able to run most of the old ST gamesand demos.Hatari is open source software and is distributed under the terms of theGNU General Public License (GPL).

Features:

Hatari supports the emulation of most of the ST and STE hardware, including somespecial tricks like raster interrupts, border effects and PSG sample sound.A joystick can be emulated with the cursor keys or with a real PC joystick.Hatari also features the possibility to 'mount' a directory of thehost system as a ST drive, or to use images from an original Atari's hard disk.
Hatari is also able to emulate the additional hardware of the TT or Falconmachines, like the Videl video chip or the DSP 56001. However, note that TTand Falcon support are currently still in development and experimental.

System requirements:

Hatari needs a fast machine (1 GHz or more for ST/STE emulation, > 2 GHzfor Falcon emulation) which is running a POSIX compatible operating system(preferably GNU/Linux) that supports the SDL library.There are also some ports to other operating systems like macOS or Windows,please see the links page for more information.Non-Linux systems like FreeBSD etc. are rarely tested, so if you run intoproblems while compiling Hatari on such platforms, please let us know!

I have a raspberryPi and Arduino connected via i2C. I2c tools for mac. Thanks for the GREAT info. On the RPi I have a python script that takes int values and simply sends them to the RPi, which in turn echoes them back. Excuse me, since I am a novice arduino hacker, but would I be better off in using int values, or converting to strings before sending to the arduino via i2C?

Have a look at the downloads page for detailsabout the required libraries and available packages.Some binary packages are now available, too, but not for all architectures.So you might need to also have GNU C on your system to recompile the sourcecode of Hatari.

Before you can finally run the emulator, you also need a TOS image file.TOS is the built-in operating system of the Atari 16/32 bit computers.Since it is not possible to ship one of these image files with Hatari,you either have to create your own image from your Atari or you have touse EmuTOS, a free TOSreplacement.

PC Atari	PC Atari is one of the most popular Atari 2600 emulators. It provides a nice GUI, fast emulation, supports all cartridge types, has good support for various controllers (including MS Sidewinder controllers) and supports sound with Sound Blaster and 100% compatibles. It even supports Pitfall 2. It's worth the download. Comes in both DOS and Windows versions.
pyTari	This is an Atari emulator programmed entirely in Python and some common modules. Currently, it requires only PyGame 1.5.0 and Numeric.
Stella	Stella is another popular Atari 2600 emulator, which is also the most portable, with ports to Unix, Linux, MAC OS and OS/2. It rivals PC Atari in emulation. This emulator is probably the emulator of choice along with PC Atari. It provides sound emulation and all types of cartridge formats, and the Windows version (formerly StellaX) provides a very nice interface. It's worth the download.
VCS 2600	This emulator supports sound, has 3 different videomodes, and all different cartridge types, and is an all around good emulator.
Virtual 2600	This is the DOS port of Virtual 2600, although,confusingly enough, Virtual VCS is Dan Boris's port of Virtual 2600! This is an outdated emulator, and provides no sound emulation.
Virtual VCS	This emulator supports many cartridge types. Although it has no sound emulation whatsoever and is outdated, it is still a nice emulator.
z26	This emulator which was written in 100% assembly is based on of Paul Robson's A26 emulator. It generates sound through the SoundBlaster perfectly, and runs most Atari 2600 games at an excellent speed on Pentium Class CPUs. It also supports games with the Parker Brother's chip and TigerVision's chip. There is now also support for paddles, the Stelladaptor, and Atari Trak-Ball controllers. It is without a doubt one of the best Atari 2600 emulators out there.
