Imac Target Display Mode Brightness
Aug 07, 2017 Even if the target display mode, only the brightness of the screen keyboard, the volume and sequence of keys Display Target Mode is active. All other keyboard will be.

I always thought it was a bit stupid not to implement a screen saver or dimming feature for portables in Target disk mode.

It's possible to start up your PB in target disk mode and then close the lid. The backlight turns off when you do that. The only concern I have about this is heat. The bottom of my PB gets pretty warm after a while with the lid closed in target disk mode, and I know that PB's are engineered to shed some heat through the keyboard. Does anyone know if the fan will automatically come on in target disk mode? I've never heard it start up on mine.

Current powerbooks do not overheat with the lid closed.
Older models dissipated heat through the keyboard, but the current ones use the bottom of the case as a heat sink instead. This means that you can use it with the lid closed with no problems, as the manual explains.
The only limitation is that it must be plugged in to a keyboard, monitor and power supply - I suspect this allows the machine to be reasonably sure that it's not in a bag. I'm grateful for that, because otherwise there's a risk I might pick up my 'turned off' powerbook and put it in my bag where it might well overheat.

Best gmail client for mac. The fact that the Firewire logo glides around and doesn't stay in any one spot for too long.. that *is* the screensaver, no?
No, LCD Screens don't suffer from Burn-in like desktop CRTs, the best way to save any screen is to have it off completely, not even just dimming the screen. I know my 18 month old PB suffered greatly from having the screen on all night, even though the backlight was off, because I dont think the LCD turned off.
Though the rest of the screen is black while the Firewire icon is moving around, the backlight is still on, generating heat and draining battery power--the display has just flipped most of the pixels to black, which doesn't reduce backlight brightness--that's why you can see the Firewire icon. Ffmpeg mov to mp4 with audio.
I put a coin on the power button to remember not to press it.
Instead of fiddling with the brightness control, I just restart my PowerBook in target-mode and then put a small magnet on the touch pad. It then thinks the lid has been closed, and switches off the back light.
Contrary to what some posters think, LCD screens do suffer from burn-in. I saw a flatpanel iMac in a store the other day which had the logon-window very cleary burnt into the screen.
This is a very good reason to get an iSight. Not only is the iSight a high quality portable camera, but it comes with a magnetic mount (as well as many other mounts). Turning off your LCD could never be easier than with an iSight; just another reason to get one for yourself!
