Washing machines come with multiple cycles and features to give you many options for your laundry. But knowing what all those buttons do can be challenging. The permanent press cycle uses a pre-soak period, light agitation and lukewarm water to keep clothing treated with a permanent press finish clean, bright and wrinkle-free.

Permanent Press

Permanent press clothes made of natural, synthetic or blended fabrics get treated with a permanent press finish to keep them smooth and crisp through repeated laundering. These clothes can also be called wrinkle-free or wash-and-wear. But, permanent press clothes wrinkle easily in hot wash and rinse cycles. Trying to iron out heat-set wrinkles can damage the fabric.

Gentler Motion

A permanent press cycle on your washing machine uses a more gentle and slower motion to mix the load. This allows your clothes to move more freely, preventing wrinkles and damage to the fabric. Despite this gentle motion, the cycle length for permanent press clothes is likely to be shorter than for a normal wash. The longer your clothes remain in the washing machine, the more likely they are to wrinkle, pill or become damaged. You shouldn't use your permanent press cycle for jeans, blankets or towels that may need a more vigorous or thorough wash cycle.

Warm/Lukewarm Wash

Clothing treated with a permanent press finish shrinks in hot water. Make sure the permanent press setting on your washing machine uses warm or lukewarm water so you don't end up with a shirt a few sizes too small at the end of your wash cycle. Avoid hot water altogether with permanent press clothes.

Cool/Cold Rinse

Before the rinse cycle begins, permanent press clothes sit and cool as a built-in part of the cycle. The permanent press cycle then rinses your load in cool or cold water. Heat sets wrinkles, making this cool-down period and cool rinse a necessity. Once again, the motion is more gentle than a normal rinse cycle to prevent wrinkles.
