Sonic Utopia Review

Sonic Utopia is a Sonic gan game that attempts to redefine how 3D Sonic games should be played. What if, instead of boosting, basic platforming, and homing attacks, 3D Sonic games were instead revolving around speed, momentum, and exploration? Even though Sonic Utopia only has a single level so far, that single level introduces all these concepts beautifully. If you're a fan of the Sonic franchise but are tired of the boost formula, then you definitely should give this game a look.

The controls are simple, but deep at the same time. There's the bog-standard move, jump, and camera controls. However, there's also two buttons labeled 'Down' and 'Peelout'. Down effectively acts like the crouch button - pressing it at any point will effectively put Sonic in a 'Down' position. That means that pressing it while standing still will have Sonic crouch in place, and pressing it while sprinting will send Sonic into a ball roll, letting you go through enemies while losing very little speed. 'Peelout' practically functions as a super spin dash - holding it down will have Sonic turn into a ball and charge up speed.

And speed plays a massive part in Sonic Utopia, much more so than modern Sonic games. Without speed, you won't even be able to navigate through the world. While there is the obvious problem - how can you complete loops without speed - there are also a number of paths and routes that you simply won't be able to navigate without enough speed.

For instance, near the beginning of the game, there is a wall that you can spin dash into to break. However, if you don't have enough speed, Sonic will just bounce off it and you'll feel pretty stupid. There are also a number of slanted walls in the world. With enough speed, you can run along the side of them and unlock brand new routes through the level. Watching a few speedrunning videos on Youtube would show the potential of the level design.

GraphPad Prism Crack is a powerful software for free analyzing and graphing the scientific data with amazing features and tools.

That's not it, though. There are hidden secrets throughout the entire level. There are seven Chaos Emeralds - pretty straightforward for a Sonic game. Grabbing all of them will let you turn into Super Sonic, which will constantly drain your rings but also unlock even more movement techniques not available to normal Sonic. However, there is also another secret that old Sonic fans would recognize - Hyper Sonic. You unlock this by grabbing every Chaos Emerald and finding the Master Emerald. Not going to spoil it too much, but rest assured, it's incredibly difficult to find. Hyper Sonic will abandon all pretenses - you'll be able to straight up fly through the level. A fitting reward for going through all the trouble

There are a couple of cons regarding this game, though. The level design, while rife with potential and beautiful to look at, is a little..too open. While it rewards exploration, it can be far too difficult to find the way forward. There is one goal post in this massive Green Hill zone, and it doesn't exactly stick out. The problem is exacerbated with how many routes there are to take and how twisting and winding they are, forcing you to very quickly forget exactly which way 'forward' was.

While Sonic Utopia only has one level - Green Hill Zone - right now, there are a ton more on the way. The creator has stated that there will be six whole levels coming soon, and development is close to complete from what the latest news has indicated. Keep a close look at this project, and give it a download if this sounds like something you want to try!

Christian Whitehead, also known by his alias Taxman,[1] is an Australian video game programmer and designer.[2] He is most recognised for his work creating updated ports of early games in Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog series, as well as being the lead developer of an original game in the series, Sonic Mania.

Career[edit]

In 2006, Whitehead worked as a freelance 3D animator with the company Kine Graffiti. Since 2009, he became focused on game development, developing various fangames based on the Sonic the Hedgehog series.[3] In 2009, Whitehead produced a 'proof-of-concept' video of Sonic CD running on an iPhone using his own custom engine, the 'Retro Engine'.[4][5] In an interview with Steven O'Donnell of Good Game: Spawn Point, Whitehead proclaims that he spent 'about a year or so' convincing Sega to let him work on the Sonic CD port.[6] In 2009, a video regarding Sonic CD from Whitehead was taken down, leading Eurogamer to report that Whitehead possibly faced a cease and desist letter from Sega, which Whitehead claimed was false.[7][6] The port was released for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, iPhone and Android in 2011.[7] His port was so successful that he was later commissioned to port Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 to mobile devices.[5]

Although he released another proof-of-concept video for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in 2014, Sega did not approve of the remake.[8] In 2015, it was announced that Whitehead would be involved in his first non-Sonic game, Freedom Planet 2.[9] In 2017, Whitehead, in collaboration with Headcannon and PagodaWest Games, developed and released their own original title in the Sonic series, titled Sonic Mania.[10][11] In 2018, Sonic Mania became Sonic Mania Plus, with the release of the Encore DLC. Sonic Mania Plus was developed by Whitehead, Headcannon, PagodaWest Games, and the now included HyperKinetic.[12] Whitehead is currently working on Freedom Planet 2, built with the Unity engine,[13] for PC, Mac, and Linux.[14] In late 2018, Whitehead and other development members behind Sonic Mania founded their own studio Evening Star Studio,[15][16] where he serves as creative director and lead engine architect.[16]
